The 24% Problem: Why Duty of Care Breaks Down Between the Airport and the Hotel

November 5, 2026

Here is a number every global travel manager should know: 24%.

In a 2024 report from GBTA and FREENOW, 89% of travel programs said they have a traveler tracking system. But only 24% said they can "always" or "often" locate employees using ground transport data. In other words, most companies know which flight their people are on and which hotel they're in. The car in between is a blind spot.

That blind spot is where much of the real risk in business travel lives.

The gap in the numbers

The same study, which surveyed travelers and travel managers in the UK, Germany, Spain and Ireland, found:

  • 85% of travel programs have risk policies, but only 55% always or often address ground transport.
  • 62% run safety training, but only 56% always or often cover ground transport risks.
  • About 70% of travel managers rank safety records as a top factor when choosing transport vendors.

A separate 2024 NLA and GBTA study of US and Canadian travel managers found that 73% rank safety as their first or second priority for managed ground transportation.

So safety is the stated priority. It just isn't yet built into most programs.

What closing the gap looks like

  1. Approved providers only. Name the ground transportation companies travelers may use, especially abroad.
  2. Known chauffeurs. Know who is driving, how they were screened and what vehicle they're in.
  3. Live trip visibility. A dispatch team that knows where every traveler is, from pickup to drop-off.
  4. Someone awake at 3 a.m. A 24/7 line that can reroute a car if a protest, storm or incident blocks the road.
  5. One standard in every country. No more "we'll figure it out locally" in unfamiliar cities.

Most travel delays after a private flight are not caused by the aircraft. They come from misaligned curb timing, wrong FBO entrances, traffic surprises, and communication gaps between cabin and car. Aviation-tailored chauffeur services attack those failure points before the passenger feels them. The first lever is predictive staging. Instead of parking at the FBO two hours early or racing across town after a text, dispatch uses flight tracking and historical TEB, VNY, or OPF patterns to position the vehicle in a holding zone, then commits when the aircraft is on short final or taxiing in. That reduces both curb congestion and "where's my car" moments. The second lever is information quality. Chauffeur services that ask for tail number, FBO name, passenger count, and luggage notes can choose the right vehicle and avoid last-minute swaps. A three-SUV luggage load does not fit in a sedan reserved by habit. Getting that right once prevents a twenty-minute reload delay on the busiest part of the clock. The third lever is crew-to-ground communication . When flight attendants or scheduling apps pass updated ETAs, tailored chauffeur services update the driver in real time. The passenger should not be the relay. That single change, removing the principal from the middle, cuts cascade delays into hotel check-ins, dinner reservations, and connecting cars. Unique II Worldwide designs chauffeur services around these aviation realities: career drivers, continuous ops, and itineraries that flex when ATC or weather flexes. Delays cannot always be eliminated, but the ground leg should never be the reason the day slips. Reserve Your Chauffeur Today!

A private jet transfer looks effortless when the car waits at the right door as the stairs drop. Behind that moment sits a chain of handoffs between flight departments, FBO staff, and ground dispatch that commercial airport pickups rarely require. It usually starts with a trip sheet: aircraft type, tail number, departure and arrival FBOs, passenger count, luggage notes, and whether the principal wants curb greeting or lounge meet. Dispatch then mirrors the flight plan. As the jet files and becomes airborne, live flight-tracking tools update the estimated arrival. A private jet transfer is timed to block-in plus the minutes needed for parking, shutdown, and passenger egress, not to a published airline gate. On the FBO side, line service may reposition the aircraft after landing. That can move the passenger exit from one door to another. Experienced transfer teams stay in contact with the FBO or the trip coordinator so the chauffeur relocates before anyone walks into empty air. For international arrivals, customs and immigration at the FBO can add variable dwell time; the car must remain flexible without blocking ramp traffic. Crew and passenger logistics often diverge. Pilots may need a separate hotel run or a quick turn for the next leg while owners go downtown. A well-run private jet transfer accounts for split manifests, child seats, security preferences, and whether the chauffeur may approach the aircraft or must remain at the designated landside curb. Unique II Worldwide's career chauffeurs and newer-model fleet support these handoffs with continuous dispatch coverage. When the flight moves, the private jet transfer moves with it quietly, on time, and without asking the traveler to manage the radio. Book With Us Today!
